“So,” said Gibson. “I’m going to ask you again, and I really do hate sounding like a broken record: where did you guys get the DU for your bomb?”

Sunderland stared at the usual crack on the wall. “How many times do you want me to say it? I have no fucking idea what you are talking about!”

Gibson stared at him. If truth be told he was getting sick of interviewing Sunderland. It was now clear to Gibson that he had nothing to do with Oscar Haverford or the attack. The media, the Greene camp and on high wanting it to be true didn’t make it so. He decided to change tack, just for a last roll of the dice.

“OK. I believe you.”

“Really? Just like that?”

Gibson shrugged. “In your opinion, how would the real culprits have got their hands on the stuff?”

Tom narrowed his eyes, looked at the desk a moment. “Well, as you may know there was a lot of it used in the first Gulf War in ’91. I mean a lot.”

“Not the second time around or in Afghanistan?”

“Oh, it was used alright. They had to get rid of their stockpiles somehow. Just not as much as before. Anyway, it’s incredibly tough. That’s why it was used in tank-busting rounds. It’ll slice through practically anything. So, wherever it was used, it’s still just sitting there lodged in blown-up vehicles and buildings and in rock and soil. Probably in the water table too. Apparently, it’s been linked to birth defects and cancers in children in Iraq.”

Gibson shook his head, suddenly aware that his mouth was open a fraction.

“A nasty little surprise in the aftermath of conflict, don’t you think?” Tom said.

“So, how would someone get hold of it?”

“Simplest way would be to just extract it from the target – very carefully – and sell it off in lots. Once on a tentacle of the black market it could end up anywhere in the world.” He shrugged. “It’s possible that terror network leaders or profiteers have teams of people whose only job is to find and extract DU and I’m sure there are people who’d think it very appropriate that some of it got recycled into a bomb in London.”

Gibson scowled. “Do you think it’s appropriate?”

“Of course not!” He leaned over the table, closer to Gibson. “But then again, I never thought it was appropriate to use DU ammunition in the first place.”

Gibson shot a glance at the two-way mirror and got up.

“Don’t go anywhere,” he said.

Sunderland pulled a sarcastic grin.
